The Anglicans on Friday appointed their first female bishop in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Rev. Pat Storey, 53, a married mother of two, will serve as the bishop of Meath and Kildare, in the Church of Ireland. Born in Belfast, she previously served as rector of St. Augustine’s Church in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Anglican churches in Wales and Scotland, like the Church of Ireland, have the power to appoint women as bishops but have not yet used it; the Anglican Church of England is expected to permit the appointment of female bishops soon.
