Australia's popular morning show host and prankster Karl Stefanovic has worn the same suit for a year — and no one noticed.
The wearing of the rip-off Burberry suit for 356 days was a silent protest against the sexism his Today show co-host, Lisa Wilkinson, faces on a daily basis in regards to the clothes she wears, how she styles her hair, how she applies her make up and her general appearance.
Stefanovic proved an important point about the audience's interest in what he wears: "No one has noticed; no one gives a shit," he told Fairfax Media. "Women are judged much more harshly and keenly for what they do, what they say and what they wear."
"I'm judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humour –- on how I do my job, basically. Whereas women are quite often judged on what they're wearing or how their hair is."
Wilkinson noted in her 2013 Andrew Olle lecture the daily critique she faced from members of the public. She cited one letter, which she received from a viewer called Angela: "Who the heck is Lisa’s stylist? Whoever it is has Lisa in some shocking clothes. Today’s outfit is particularly jarring and awful. Just my two cents worth... get some style."
Stefanovic, on the other hand, can wear a smelly suit without a single commentator, member of the public or media organisation noticing. Only his co-host and another member of the Today team knew about the year-long endeavor. Point proven.
