As the ongoing civil war wages in Syria, and as ISIS continues its deadly agenda in that war-torn country, the plight of Syrian refugees has gone largely unnoticed by much of the world.
But a photo of a young Syrian girl may change that. The image, taken by photographer Osman Sağırlı, captures the devastation of that region, and the overwhelming psychological impact the war has had on the most powerless of the people in the Middle East.
CBS recounts the photojournalist’s experience as he relayed it to the BBC:
“I was using a telephoto lens, and she thought it was a weapon,” Sagirli told the BBC.
“I realized she was terrified after I took it, and looked at the picture, because she bit her lips and raised her hands. Normally kids run away, hide their faces or smile when they see a camera.”
Hundreds of thousands of Kurdish refugees flee Syria for Turkey as ISIS threatens them. According to the BBC, the image was widely circulated in Turkey after it was published but is only now going viral in English-speaking social media.
Sagirli said that the girl in the picture had traveled nearly 100 miles way to the Atmeh refugee camp near the Turkish border with her mother and two siblings.
