The UNFPA survey on domestic violence is the first region-wide initiative of this kind and is being implemented simultaneously in three countries of South Caucasus – Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. In Georgia the survey implementation started in August 2008 with the quantitative and qualitative tools development and will be completed in the fall of 2009. “Lack of statistics on domestic violence is one of the key impediments in addressing the problem effectively”, - said Ms. Rusudan Kervalishvili, Vice-Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia and a Chair of the Parliamentary Advisory Council on gender equality – “I hope that the survey results will help us in making informed decisions on combating domestic violence and establishing gender equality in Georgia” The survey findings will be used as a baseline for formulating national policies and plans as well as for advocacy and public awareness-raising campaigns on gender-based and domestic violence in Georgia. The survey launch was attended by representatives of parliament and government, including members of the newly established Inter-Agency Council on Domestic Violence, as well as by the representatives of international and non-governmental organizations.
