On December 22 amendment to the Gender Equality Law was registered at Parliament. The proposed changes to the Gender Equality Law comprises enhancement of gender institutional mechanisms on the level of local government. This implicates obligation of creating gender equality councils at Sakrebuls (City Councils) and appoint person responsible for gender mainstreaming at the Gamgebeli (regional Governor) office.
Package of amendment was prepared by working group “Enhancing Institutional Mechanism”. Working period lasted for two month and was open for any interested person. Group was formed with the representatives of the local government, NGOs, International organizations and government. WIC had consultation meetings with thw Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure and Human Rights Inter-Agency coordination council’s representatives. On June 2015, the proposed changes were discussed by parliamentary Gender Equality Council.
The amendment was lobbied and registered at parliament by Head of Gender Equality Council Manana Kobakhidze.
Amendment to the law was prepared by Women’s Information Centre with support of Oxfam GB and working group “Enhancing Institutional Mechanism”.
