On October 2nd, 2019 Ms. Esma Gumberidze, Youth delegate of Georgia to the United Nations delivered a statement on Agenda item 25: Social Development in the margins of the Third Committee, 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In her statement, Ms. Gumberidze spoke about the importance of including persons with disabilities in all parts of social, political, economic and cultural life. It is important to identify the persons, the barriers they are potentially facing and let them be heard first.
Youth delegate of Georgia emphasized the difficulties that people with disabilities are facing in the conflict affected areas, specifically in Gali district of Georgia, currently under Russian occupation.
In response to the Russian delegate who referred to Abkhazia as a sovereign state and advised Georgia to hold bilateral talks with relevant side on pending humanitarian issues, Georgian Youth Delegate was compelled to engage in the discussion. In exercising the right of reply, Esma Gumberidze reminded the Delegate from the Russian Federation that the fact of occupation of Georgia's regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia is recognized and reiterated by different international bodies. The Russian Federation exercises effective control over those territories and thus the responsibility for the human rights situation and violations in the occupied territories rests with Russia.
