National Action Plan on SCR 1325 Launched in Sierra Leone

Category: Gender policy
2010-06-10

On the occasion of the Global Open Day for women and peace, the President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, launched a National Action Plan on UN Security Council resolutions 1325 and 1820, at an event hosted by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs (MSWGCA) in collaboration with UN agencies, women’s groups and non-governmental organizations.

The National Action Plan on resolutions 1325 and 1820 includes a budget and concrete indicators to monitor implementation. The Action Plan focuses on five different pillars — participation, prevention, prosecution, protection and promotion — and identifies 18 priority areas.

As part of the Global Open Day for women and peace, held in the context of the 10th anniversary of SCR 1325, the Executive Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Sierra Leone, Michael Schulenburg, received women peace advocates for a consultation on their concerns regarding peace and security. More than 30 women from all walks of life had participated in a preparatory meeting on 4 June to articulate key issues to raise with the ERSG. They included the importance of access to justice, economic empowerment and respect for women’s human rights.
