Parliamentary Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee considered with the 1st reading the draft by Vice-Speaker and Head of Gender Equality Council Manana Kobakhidze on establishment of Municipal Gender Equality Councils by City Councils.

It will be an effective mean for development of the respective recommendations in view of timely response to discrimination on local level. Proposed changes to the Law on gender Equality consider establishment of institutional mechanism of gender equality by ensuring gender equality council at City Councils and appointment of persons with responsibility on gender equality issues at the Governor's office.

For building capacity of those who are now responsible on gender equality on the level of local government, Women’s Information Center carried out series of training in Borjomi.

WIC’s training were held in several stages in order to provide the officials from capital Tbilisi and regional municipalities on the essence of gender equality, gender-based approach, stereotypes, difference between gender and sex as well as importance of institutional mechanism, its structure, functions and obligations. Training participants also familiarized with the principles of gender budgeting and gender analysis.

Training was carried out within Sustaining Gender Justice through Enhancing Women’s Political Engagement project aimed at supporting enhancement of institutional mechanism for gender equality at the local self-governmental level. The project is implemented by Women’s Information Center with the support of Georgian office of British organization Oxfam.
