IOC gives award for top woman in sport to a man

Category: Sport
2016-11-08

The best woman in world sport is a man. You read that right, the International Olympic Committee has given its top award for women in sport to a man.

Not a gender ambiguous man, an actual bloke. Of course they did.

Evidently Bono is not the only male who is also the best woman.

The IOC has bizarrely – and sure this is an organisation well acquainted with bizarre– has chosen as the person who has done more for women and sport a male Ethiopian sports journalist.

Dagim Zinabu Tekle was presented with the IOC Women and Sport World Trophy at a ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland on Monday.

Tekle had created a radio show which had broadcast three times a week for five years.

The show - the Lisan Women's Sport Radio Program - was "dedicated to inspiring women and girls to be more active in sport and to pursue their goals and dreams."

"This trophy is not only for women ... it is for both men and women who work toward gender equity," Tekle said in an IOC statement.

"I created this show because I realised that in Ethiopia, women have no voice, and they are not heard."

The five continental awards the IOC issued were all won by women.
