National Geographic, a magazine that has been around for 128 years, is making history with its January issue, which will feature a photo of transgender person for the first time. The publication gathered interviews with more than 80 young transgender and “gender-expansive” people for its “Gender Revolution” special, and chose Avery Jackson, a transgender girl of Kansas City, Mo., as the cover star. Last year, Jackson released a video diary that went viral, explaining that she was “just a normal girl.”
“The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy,” Jackson said, in a quote that appears on the magazine’s cover. Jackson’s mom also made headlines with a 2014 speech she gave, where she explained that while she is a “conservative, Southern Baptist, Republican from Alabama.” Her political leanings, however, do not stop her from supporting her daughter. “My God taught us to love one another. My daughter is a girl in her heart. She knows it. God knows it. And that’s good enough for me.”
