A female-only beauty parlor catering to the needs of Muslim women will open its doors Sunday in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, the New York City borough.
The Le’Jemalik Salon, which means “for your beauty” in Arabic, was founded by Huda Quhshi, a 37-year-old Muslim woman. The business seeks to provide a comfortable space where hijab-wearing women can get a haircut, unburdened by worries that a man might seem them without their hair covering. According to Islamic precepts, women cannot show their hair to men outside the family.
“I once decided to go to a salon and when a man walked in I had to throw my head scarf over my wet hair and run to a back room,” Quhshi told The New York Post. “After that experience, I was like, ‘You know what? We can’t do this.’”
Le’Jemalik boasts an opaque revolving door between the reception and salon areas, ensuring that men cannot glimpse into the parlor. A range of services will be available, some typical — hair cuts, waxing, manicures, and pedicures — and others more specific to the needs of Muslim women. Customers can request manicures with so-called “halal” nail polish, for example, and treat themselves to henna tattoos.
Quhshi also noted that while Le’Jemalik was created with Muslims in mind, “women of all faiths, races, and ethnicities” are welcome.
