Sterility can be called the disease of the XXI century. Contemporary medicine considers artificial fertilization to be the best solution to the problem. What are the causes of sterility? “The Fact” correspondent has discussed the problem with Mr. Archil Khomasuridze, Director General of the scientific-research institute for reproductive health.
- Mr. Khomasuridze, what sterility is caused by? - Surely, sterility can be called the disease of the XXI century though it’s not epidemic. In Georgia 10% of couples are infertile. The same figure is applicable to the entire world. It can be caused by such severe diseases as venereal infection, endocrine genesis etc. Some sterile women suffer from a certain pathology which should be cured. - Is that right that in some cases sterile men refuse to go to the doctor because of their complexes? - Such cases are widely spread among Georgia men. - Which age is considered as the most reproductive? - It’s hard to say. Even a 50 years old woman can give birth provided she is well preserved, though the best reproductive age is considered to be 18-28. - How often do couples resort to artificial fertilization? - There are two kinds of artificial fertilization: insemination (for sterile men) and extracorporal in vitro fertilization (for sterile women). In our clinic we daily make one or two women artificial fertilization procedures. - Is it possible that in some time after unsuccessful artificial fertilization procedure a women conceives? - Sure, it is possible. - How much does artificial fertilization procedure cost in Georgia? - In many countries it’s financed by the State. It’s just one of the most popular and modern ways of treatment. - You truly help new babies arrive in this world, but is it blessed by the Church? - According to Georgian Patriarch the Church doesn’t interfere in secular matters. Nevertheless it is aware of our activity and naturally doesn’t support what we do.
