Institute for War and Peace Reporting and Transparency International Georgia are inviting print journalists to submit entries for an award Promoting Journalism on Internally Displaced People.

The competition is supported by the Cross Caucasus Journalism Network of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, which is financed by the European Union, as a part of the EIDHR initiative.

The aim of the competition is to raise public awareness about the situation of IDPs in Georgia, including both the IDPs from the 1990s and those from 2008. Stories based on interviews with IDPs housed in Tserovani settlement will not be considered, as these have been relatively well covered by the media in the past.

To be eligible for the competition, interested candidates must submit articles published in Georgian no later than April 6, 2009, 11 AM.

The article must be delivered in three copies to Institute for War and Peace Reporting, 7b. Dzmebi Zubalashvilebi str., Tbilisi, 0110, Georgia (next to the parliament) or sent via email to competition@iwpr.ge.

Articles will be judged on the following criteria:

1.Is the topic important?

2.Are all sides of the issue presented impartially and without judgment?

3.Is the important information at the beginning with detail gradually revealed?

4.Are exact sources of information identified and quotes attributed? If not, are reasons given?

5.Is Georgian language used easy to understand, precise, rich, and correct?

The winner will be awarded a certificate and 300 EUR.

The author of the second best article will be granted 150 EUR.

Additionally, the best photo reportage visualizing the situation of IDPs will receive a 200 EUR prize.

The awards ceremony will take place on April 8, 2009, 16 PM at the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, 7b. Dzmebi Zubalashvilebi str., Tbilisi, 0110, Georgia.
