Anti-human Trafficking Efforts Top UAE Priority, Says Minister

Category: Trafficking
2009-05-12

The UAE is providing legislative and executive channels while enhancing international cooperation to prevent human trafficking, Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said on Saturday.

Dr Gargash,  who is also the Minister for Federal National Council Affairs, said efforts to combat human trafficking to protect society were a top priority for the UAE leadership.

Dr Gargash said a recent session of the Federal National Council discussed crucial social issues including human trafficking, which is considered a direct threat to the security of society.

The minister said some international reports were trying to undermine UAE’s efforts in combating this organised crime.

However, the minister said the government’s open policy of council debates was clear evidence of the UAE leadership’s commitment to deal with the issue.

“The UAE has emphasised its commitment to fight human trafficking. The UAE is seriously dealing with this inhuman activity, by providing needed legislative and executive channels and by enhancing international cooperation,” said Dr Gargash.

The FNC debates complement the efforts of the National Committee to Combating Human Trafficking, Dr Gargash said, adding that they convey a clear message to the international community to verify the efforts being exerted by the Arab world to combat this dangerous crime.

He also stressed that these efforts are in line with the social and Islamic traditions that respect and appreciate human beings.
