UAE human trafficking cases double in '08

Category: Trafficking
2009-06-02

Human trafficking cases doubled in the UAE last year, the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking said on Sunday, attributing the jump to the country’s “intensifying” to crackdown on the illegal trade.

The Committee said in its annual report that human trafficking cases rose to more than 20 in 2008, without being more specific, up from 10 the previous year.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said at the beginning of May the number of cases reported in 2008 stood at 18.

The Committee also said prosecutions had increased and the severity of punishments were toughened.

The UAE is making a big push to be seen to be tackling human trafficking in the face of growing international pressure to prevent migrant workers ending up in forced labour or the sex trade.

The UAE has introduced a raft of measures aiming to tackle the problem in recent years, but there remain lingering doubts as to how strictly these measures are being enforced.
