Possibly the oldest woman in South Africa - and the world - has died at the age of 134, Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale said on Thursday.

Moloko Temo, born July 4 1874, died on Wednesday.

"One of the proudest moments we remember about her was when she voted in the April 22 general elections. This makes her a democrat at heart and one of the defenders of our freedom," said Mathale.

"Limpopo province was her home, and we are thankful to her family for having allowed her to share the remaining part of her life with us".

Temo leaves behind her only surviving daughter, Evelyn Mothemane, 29 grandchildren and countless great grandchildren.

"We convey our deepest condolences to her family and relatives during this moment of grief," said Mathale.

Temo's age was never been confirmed by Guinness World Records.
