Georgian Youth’s meeting with Austrian journalist

Category: Gender in Caucasus
2009-07-14

On July 12, Georgian youth between18-25 gathered together at the office of Women’s Information Center. The purpose of the meeting was a visit of the friends of Georgia from Austria _ Siegfried Woeber and Marion Bacher.

Siegfried worked in Georgia for approximately 4 years. Now he works for the "Austrian Helsinki Association - For Human Rights and Int. Dialogue" and he came to Georgia as a photo artist. He has taken a great number of photos of/in our country.

Marion Bacher is a journalist. she works as a freelance journalist for magazines like "Die Zeit" and  "Liga" _  human rights magazine. Marion’s aim was to raise Austrian and international society’s awareness of the Georgian youth’s everyday life and problems they are facing, to find out their views about political life in Georgia. After publishing the article we hope the Austrian reader to have a notion about Georgian youth’s life.

August War was the main topic of the meeting as it still remains the most “sensitive point” for the young generation and for all the inhabitants of Georgia as well. Each participant of the meeting tried to speak honestly how the War reflected on his/her ongoing or future life. Among the youth were students and undergraduates, the ones that are involved/not involved in politics, the ones that support current Georgian Government or “fight” against it in accordance with the opposition. Youth’s talking to Marion about ongoing political problems in Georgia was very interesting.
